I have three bird baths cement around my house. The birds make extensive use of them. When the rain does not provide water for them, I do. But someone told me mosquitoes breed in these things and I should not use them. Is this true?

Mosquito Dunkers, not "donuts." Mosquito Dunkers are a product round donut-shaped being dropped into small pools of water. Dunkers release a larvicide that kills mosquito larvae before they become flying adults, which always seem to be moving an inch away from my ear.
Mosquitoes need still water to lay their eggs. Thus, instead of adding ingredients to water, all you need to do is mix a little water and they can not reproduce. This is why many artificial ponds and water gardens have waterfalls and fountains. It is not just the aesthetics or showing. The movement created by the fall stirs the surface of the water and prevent mosquito breeding. With that in mind in several companies have developed devices that we can put in our bird baths that will awaken the water. One is called "Water Wiggler" and as its name suggests, it vibrates at the surface of the water to prevent mosquitoes.

Now I'll tell you a little secret. None of these things above that we have mentioned are necessary at all. Neither oil, donut, or UPS are necessary to prevent mosquitoes. And why do you ask? Since it takes at least a week, and probably more, for a mosquito to go from egg to adult. This means that all you have to do is change water in birdbaths once a week and you'll never, ever have to worry about mosquitoes in your bathroom.

Potted plants can be much more important source of breeding mosquitoes than any bird bath. These small dishes that we put in flower pots, to catch up water, are a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Keep an eye on them. That's my advice little garden of the week.

To prevent mosquitoes from ever forming in your birdbath everything you have to do is change the water once a week. But you'd better take care of your bird bath more than that. Any standing water can attract mosquitoes and lay their eggs. I do not know of a product, you can use, because the birds can become ill.

If you really like bird baths, cleaned every other day, this way the mosquito larvae will not hatch.

Pour oil on a kind of baths, as harmful oil olive oil you can use!

Incase it is true I would make sure to clean them on a weekly basis. There really is not much you can put in the water would be safe for birds too. Although it may be time to clean them every week it seems that if you like watching birds in their way it could be worthwhile.

The local garden center that you can add chemicals to water, they just take a few drops every week to kill mosquito eggs.
