For software, try Family Tree Builder by MyHeritage.com.

For history, archives of research papers.

For your Ahnentafel, try www.cyndislist.com, www.askmyrtle.com, etc.

http://www.familysearch.org - for "Personal Ancestry File."

Legacy, RootsMagic, and The Master Genealogist of all time (last I checked) had introduced free versions. I checked these programs in the past, and they all deserve instruction that your addiction to the advancement of genealogy.

Until you start with a free program that will export format GED.com, OK when you want to upgrade to a paid program that offers all the bells and whistles.I still recommend you keep the program on your own computer using a program that installs on your machine. This way, you have full control of content and can work with the database on any future software you select.

And always evaluate and cite your sources. Any system, even filing cabinets, index cards, stone tablets, or software is useless without this crucial step. A good family is the only way to avoid becoming a writer of fiction.

Have a blast.
