You want to start my own little pet shop, how do I start with? My husband and I want to start our own little pet shop because that's all we ever around animals and love to death. So we're just wanting to know how we go about starting one?
In addition to a space (you can buy or rent), you will need a lot of money, business / retail or sales tax license, insurance, an accountant, lawyer, and whatever license you need to sell pets. And a lot of knowlegde on everything you sell ... people ask many questions.
I would not sell puppies and kittens .... they are all puppy mills and backyard breeders. No breeder will sell to a pet store, and if you sell someone a sick animal, you can find in the yard. (Do you really want that headache?)
I want to see if you can work with shelters in your area and keep some of Adoptables in store (as they do in PetSmart) If there is a Petco or Petsmart in your area, it will be difficult will have a good deal .. like the other person said .... they squash the mom and pop stores, unfortunately.
Check www.petage.com and subscribe to their mag. (Free last I knew). They have a lot of information on where it is to buy supplies and all other good things.
There is another mag too .. Pet Product News (. .. Com I think otherwise just do a search) They also have a directory "big" nothing but distributors for orders and retail company. I think the subscription is free as well.
Good luck:)
Start by going in the neigborhood looking at any small buildings for sale. Once you buy it, go to your local shelter and get some of the older pets. One suggestion is evey 3-4 months to take the animals to be slaughtered for sale in your shop. At the local retreat center an agreement saying that you make the pets there to sell, and they alough pets to be there, if someone wants to buy an old dog.
You must first obtain permission and find a place and I think you might need a course in caring for animals what kind of things.
Good luck with that, with all the major chains (Petco, Petland and so they run the mother 'and pop "stores out of business.
