Feeding Wildbirds In your garden

SEED CAKE

First, choose your container, half coconut, yoghurt pots or margarine, etc., then drill a hole in the bottom and tie a knot in a piece of string in order to hang the finished meal.

Gather your ingredients as follows:

wild bird seed

Melted fat / lard

Moistened stale bread crumbs

crumbs cookie jar

Suet

Mix all but the fat in a bowl. chosen to fill your container two thirds with the mixture.

Pour over the melted fat.

Let cool.

Hang bird.

An alternative to suspension is to turn seed cakes directly on the bird table.

SCRAP PUDDING

Choose a container for use in the kitchen like a box of scrap and leave it in a convenient location and ready to fill with:

bakery fillings

Bacon rind

Apples past their best - windfalls

Potatoes - baked

Leftover meat - cooked

Rice and pasta - cooked

Cheese

Any bits that you might have left over to avoid salty foods.

Finely chop all the ingredients you have collected and then made up like cake and drag to the birds.

OTHER IDEAS

Cooked potatoes, potatoes particular - will be picked clean skins.

Bread or cake - soaked to prevent swelling after the bird has swallowed.

Pasta and rice - pre-cooked to avoid swelling.

Cat food - small quantities for meat eaters.

Windfall apples I usually peel and cut into quarters.

raw pastry stuck on the fence on a feeder or a tree, can be rolled into the food of wild birds, or finely chopped leftover food.

For hanging

You can buy reusable containers for peanuts and seeds, make sure you buy the nuts were "approved \ 'printed on the packaging and a good mix of wild bird seed is best. You can buy fat balls in pet stores, if n \ t the time you make the pudding bird yourself, they should be pressured to loosen the filling before dragging them to the birds.

Wooden poles

Remember freshwater (kept from freezing in winter) is very important not only to drink but to allow birds to bathe and preen their feathers to keep in good condition. A shallow dish is best, (I use an old stove barbecue) with stepping stones in the base.

Just put in as much food as the birds can eat the leftovers must be removed to avoid attracting rodents! Keep your bird feeders and a clean table to prevent bacterial infection.
