Wooden Bird Houses

It is made of wood and painted, but I want it to last a while and do not want the rain to rot. What can I use and how much does it cost?

Spray with clear acrylic spray paint. Use the light of several layers. Make sure it is clean and dry before painting. They also sell a poly UV in an aerosol, which should protect against the elements. These tend to turn yellow in the sun so if there is no white in color using acrylic.

You'll have to update all finishes you use every two years if you want it to look new. Personally, I like the weathered look of old birdhouses.

Trapped moist is what makes the wood rot faster. Once suspended, wet has no chance to contact one place long, it will most likely not rot for many years.

Since the house is already painted birds, a nominal outside coat clear is your best bet. A couple of coats of polyurethane will add some protection, but it should be reapplied every two years. marine varnish is more expensive, but made for outdoor use. Although marine varnish should be reapplied every few years.

Another option is to leave the house all the time of naturally occurring birds. A bird house painted with natural weathering looks good in a garden. Worst case, a light sanding and a new paint job will make the birdhouse new look again.

If you apply the paint or varnish, be careful not to put inside the bird house. These finishes are not healthy for baby birds!
